Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is one of the many injuries you may sustain after being involved in a traffic accident. You will likely suffer from it if your head slammed into the dashboard or any hard object due to the collision’s impact.

TBI is a type of brain damage which was caused by an injury, as stated by the Mayo Clinic. A person may sustain it if there is violent jolt or blow to his head, which then causes his brain to hit the skull. It may also result from penetration to the skull, which may be caused by bullet, sharp and hard objects, and even the skull itself (if a piece of it hits the brain).

The effects of TBI greatly depend on its severity. People with mild TBI may only experience brain cell dysfunction for a brief time. Meanwhile, those who were seriously injured may suffer from paralysis and even death.

To be more specific, here are personal, medical, and emotional effects of TBI:

  • Inability to work- Your doctor may prohibit you from working while you are still under medication or rehabilitation. Forcing your body beyond its limitation just to perform your job duties may only result in bigger problems so it is better to just follow your doctor’s orders.
  • Coma- You will be unaware of the things that are happening around you. It may last for days or weeks, depending on the graveness of the injury.
  • Locked-in syndrome- Unlike in coma, you will be awake and aware of what is happening around you, but you will lose your ability to speak or move.
  • Cognitive problem- Your injury may affect one of your various skills including decision making, memory, organization, learning, multitasking, and problem solving.
  • Financial problems- If your ability to work was impaired by your injury, you will likely encounter financial problems in the long run because of your continuous expenses, but absence of income.
  • Emotional trauma- Because your injury may have long effects on your body, there is a high chance that you will suffer from anxiety, irritability, and depression.

TBI can negatively change your life so you should make sure that the person who caused it will be held liable for his negligent actions. Los Angeles brain injury lawyers will help you pursue a case against him in order to recover monetary damages for your losses.
